WARGAME with die-cut counters: Budapest 1956
Budapest 1956: The Men of Corvin
On October 23, 1956, Hungarian students marched in support of Poland; the communist government allowed the march and the subsequent gathering in Parliament Square, but ultimately, tanks fired into the crowd. The uprising began with the siege of the Hungarian radio station, the seizure of weapons from police stations and barracks, and the toppling of the giant statue of Stalin. Within days, the city rose up and organized itself to face the Soviet intervention. On October 30, the Russian army withdrew... only to return in force on November 3, crushing the rebellion with fire and steel; the repression was bloody.
Rather than simulating the entire revolution—which offered the insurgents no chance of success—we chose to focus on the Budapest district that put up the fiercest resistance: Corvin, in Pest’s 8th District.
Budapest 1956: The Men of Corvin simulates these clashes from late October and early November at a tactical scale through a series of chronological scenarios. Although the Hungarian revolutionaries stood no chance against Russian might and the West's non-intervention, the initial battles went in the insurgents' favor, and even the final crushing of the revolt in November proved difficult for the Soviets.
Budapest 1956: The Men of Corvin is designed for players seeking a short yet faithful simulation of these events. Across four scenarios, players will relive the intense combat for Budapest’s Corvin district.
